i'm not sure if a woodear mushroom is universally known. there is a tree nearby our house that has a huge one (it does look like a wooden ear) on it...a couple of months ago, it feel off and another one has replaced it already.
John - I have to confess that I don't know what a woodear mushroom is. On the other hand, I'm a city boy who doesn't know a plum blossom from a plumb line.
I find myself mentally trying to "complete" the third line, even though I understand the context upon re-reading the haiku, and I agree that the phrase "makes its way through" sounds more poetic than something like:
woodear mushroom the wind makes its way through the tree
